Show Bureau of Reclamation W y Aid Friendship Cruise i Water releases from Flaming Flam-ing Gorge Dam will be increased in-creased to aid boaters on the Green River portion oft the Friendship Cruise May 28 and 29, it was announced today by Bureau of Reclamation Regional Director David L. Crandall. About 2,000 to 3, 000 cubic feet per second will be released continuously from the dam over a three-day three-day period about a week before be-fore the cruise. Hydrologists have estimated estimat-ed that the increased flows take about one week to travel the 290 miles from Flaming Gorge Dam to Green River, Utah, starting point fr tlie Friendship Cruise. Last year some boaters complained that the increased flows did not reach Green River at the best possible time, so a test will be run this year before the cruise to determine the accuracy ac-curacy of the time estimate. Complicating the effect at Green River, Utah, are inflows in-flows from three large uncontrolled un-controlled tributaries, the Ya-mpa, Ya-mpa, the White, and the Duchesne, Du-chesne, which enter the main river between the dam and city: weather conditions in the upper reaches of these tributary tri-butary streams during the snowmelt can drastically affect af-fect the amount of water in the Green River at Green River Ri-ver Utah The Friendship Cruise takes place annually on the Memorial Memor-ial Day weekend. Many hundreds hund-reds of boaters will travel 126 miles down the Green River and 80 miles up the Colorado River to Moab, Utah, where the cruise terminates. Most common hazard is running aground on sandy shoals, but this danger is much lessened by high flows in the river. Crandall added, "We believe be-lieve the volume of water released re-leased from Flaming Gorge Dam as a means of extending extend-ing the multipurpose values of this facility, together with tributary runoff of an above average runoff year .
