Swell the Rolls The race for County Commission Com-mission seats which are open in November became even mere popular this week with the filing of additional applications appli-cations by political hopefuls. J. C. Beeson announced his intention to seek the 4-year Commission seat on the Democrat Dem-ocrat ticket. He indicated in filing that he feels very strongly strong-ly in a number of matters and feels that they need attention. atten-tion. Federal aid projects should be looked into, ' Mr. Beeson.. stated, because although al-though federal aid is available avail-able for many projects, the County does not need to apply for this aid just because it is there. He also indicated that he. is in favor of more industry for this area rather than just tourism to provide a more stable economy. "Although "Al-though I am not against tourism," Mr. Beeson said, "I feel that more industry should be sought to provide a stable economy the year around, which tourism cannot can-not do." Jake Henningson, manager at Bunnell Dodge in Moab since 1954, this week also announced an-nounced for the 2-year Commission Com-mission post on the Republican Repub-lican ticket. Henningson served serv-ed as president of the Moab Boat Club for one year and has indicated that he will judge each proposal on its own merit and determine which proposals .seem to be the best for "the county in the long run. He believes in a realistic view as f5 Wnat can take place in this area. He stated that he feels that through his dealings with people' in the past years, he has a good working knowledge of the needs and wishes of the public. pub-lic. Mr. Henningson is a Republican. Re-publican. Another Republican to file for the 2-year post this week was D. L. Taylor, co-owner of Taylor Livestock Company of Moab. Taylor is a Moab native and has served as president of the locaf cattlemen's cattle-men's association, as well as vice president of the state association. He presently is County Director in the State Cattlemen's Association. He f ? : ! v I ! I V i J. C. Beeson Bob Robertson is also chairman of the Grand County Economic Development Develop-ment Committee and is r. director on the Grand County Water Conservancy District. In making his announcement announce-ment of candidacy, Taylor said, "I have taken an active interest in the operation of Grand County in the past and will continue to do so." Dwain C. Barker, a longtime long-time Moab resident, and teacher tea-cher for 19 years in Grand County, this week declared his candidacy for the office of 4-year County Commissioner Commission-er as a Democrat. He served one term as chairman of the Grand County Democratic Party and is currently member of the Moab Museum Board and a director of the Grand County Credit Union. He holds a B.S. degree from Brigham Young University. Filing for the post of 4-year 4-year Commissioner Tuesday as a Republican was Harold "Sonny" Bowen, Jr., who presenuyworks as sales manager ma-nager for Gaither Chevrolet. Bowen is a veteran of the Korean War and has worked in this area for the past 15 years. During that time he has worked as a miner, builder buil-der and surveyor. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks and Booster club. He noted this week that he favors increasing tourism in the area through state improvement im-provement of roads to parks. He indicated that he would actively oppose" the new proposed pro-posed mining bill and would work during his term to promote pro-mote a county wide water and sewer study. The seat of 4-year Commissioner Commis-sioner gained yet another competitor with the filing on Wednesday of Bob Robertson, Robert-son, electronics instructor at the Moab Area Vocational Center. Mr. Robertson is a Republican. He was born in Moab and attended school here before going to the University of Utah, of which he is a graduate. grad-uate. "My. primary concern is for the community and high on my list of priorities is brnging in more light industry. indus-try. George T'Hub" Newell also filed for the 4-year Commission Commis-sion post as a Republican. Newell is presently employed employ-ed by Keystone Wallace Resources Re-sources as a control engineer. He has served in the position posi-tion of surveyor for both San Juan and Grand Counties, and worked as an engineer for the highway department for 18 years. Mr. Newell is a veteran of World War II and is a native of Moab". "I think the County should have someone with engineering engin-eering experience on the Commission at this time, especially es-pecially since a large portion por-tion of the budget is now being be-ing spent on roads and airport air-port construction," Mr. Newell New-ell said. "I would work to represent the majority of the people in all my "decisions," "decis-ions," he concluded. One other hopeful to file for office this week was S. E. Scharf. Mr. Scharf, a form-erMoab form-erMoab city councilman, is a Republican vying for the 4-year Commission posf. |
