Show McKay Seeking Funding for Canyonlands I'tah Koiresentative Ciiim MeKay, in prepared testimony testi-mony for the Appropriations Interior and Helated Agencies Agenc-ies Commit toe, listed eight priority projects that lie stated stat-ed .should be considered ' by Congress for funding in fiscal fis-cal year 1!)73. Among tho priorities were appropriations which would afteel Canyon-lands Canyon-lands National Park and the Mant i-LaSal National forest. McKay pointed out that the committee had been able to provide funds for vital western west-ern projects last year that had been slighted or overlooked over-looked entirely in the Ad. ministration's budget requests and he aked for the same thoughuul examination of programs that would be of benefit to Utah and other western states. Funding was requested fur wildlife Habitat and Livestock Live-stock "Range Improvements in the amount of $555,900 for tliis year and a total of $2, 779,000 over five years for a program in the Dixie, Fisli-lake. Fisli-lake. and Manti-LaSal National Nation-al Forests to Control pinyon-juniper pinyon-juniper growth and to restore shrub life. The request for Canyon-lands Canyon-lands National Park highways totaled $1,000,000 for construction con-struction of the Big Spring Canyon Bridge following completion com-pletion of Squaw Flat road. In addition, $19,000 was requested re-quested for trails on the west side of the park near French Spring; and $280,000 for maintenance and operation of present facilities. Other projects included in McKay's funa request were for shrub research; research on reclamation and rehabilitation rehabili-tation of surface mining areas; ar-eas; sanitation facility improvements im-provements at Flaming Gorge Recreation Area; improvement improve-ment of facilities at both China Meadows Reservoir and at Mill Creek Canyon; additional Forest Service Research Re-search Projects concerning the ecology and the weather. |
