Show Drownings in Utah Prompt Warning, and Safety Rules During the month of June, four Utahns were drowned in one week. All four could swirn, but made some mistake in ' relationship relation-ship to basic water safety. Each year in the. United States, approximately sev- -en thousand people drown. Your county Extension agent, Blaine Jones wants you to enjoy the sunumer safely. He suggests the' following fol-lowing safety precautions around water: 1. Always have a respect for water. Overconfidence sometimes causes carelessness. careless-ness. 2. Never swim alone. Even Ev-en the best of water safety instructors never chance swimming alone. 3. A swimmer should know and follow his swimming swim-ming ability 'and limitations. limita-tions. Don't swim in situations situa-tions which go beyond your abilites. 4. Swimming for long periods can be dangerous. Watch for danger signals like uncontrolled shivering, shiver-ing, lips and fingernails turning blue. 5. Don't swim right after af-ter eating. Recent research re-search revealed that eating eat-ing . and swimming does not necessarily cause painful pain-ful cramps, but common sense dictates that any type of hard physical exertions ex-ertions after eating is hard on the body. 6. Stay out of rough water. wa-ter. . 7. Don't go into cold water wa-ter if you are overheated. , It takes a few minutes for the body to adjust to the codd, and- the process . of adjustment siliould be extremely ex-tremely slow. 8. Never take a dare or foolish , challenge. . 9. Don't rely on supporting support-ing devices! Innertuibes and air mattresses are fun but often a nonswimmer gets in water over his head and he may slip off or they may get punctured. Ability Abil-ity .in basic swimming skills is essential. 10. Never chew gum while swimming. Gasping for breath may cause gum to get caught in the wind pipe or lungs. . 11. Everyone who swims should know how . to administer ad-minister mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If you would observe -these 11 basic swimming safety rules, your summer will be safer and happier. |
