Show Despite Occasional Cooling Rains- Moab Finally Feels the Heat After a whole spring of Temperatures soared to cool meandering, and des- 100 degrees on the ' first pite occasional sprinkles, day of the month, and the weather guage . flipped by the Fourth of July hit loose -during the. first full 104 at the Pack Creek sta- week of July in Moab Val- tion. ley. The hot weather was a ' little . reminiscent of sixty years ago, when it was "all fired" hot andi dry enough to cause a Times writer to comment "I hope misguided citizens praying for hot weather the past few months can see the error of their . ways." . By the end of last week, residents began casting wary eyes at the skies. It had clouded over, and looked like rain in Moab Valley. The people had just gone through a month that netted over an inch of rainfall in several cloudbursts cloud-bursts which left basements base-ments full, of water and streets filled with sand. Weather comments in old Times issues are significant sig-nificant of the industrial changes in Moab Valley over the years. Forty years ago, one 1.62 inch storm was called a "beneficial downpour;" twenty years ago, a .46 inch storm was a "million dollar rain." This year, the whole June total was 1.21 inches and the downpours were termed term-ed "devastating." That they were, too. Rolling streams of sand- saturated water can be a Messing to a thirsty orchard, or-chard, such as ' once dominated dom-inated the valley. But to a modern city, it means costly cleanup work. So far, however July rain clouds have been of a much gentler nature and residents are beginning to relax and enjoy the- soft cooling rain. |
