Show finally, some attention One of the most infamous stretches of State Highway in Utah is finally going to get some attention. atten-tion. A small stretch of G.5 miles of Interstate 70, four lanes wide, is going to be built this summer and fall, beginning at Cisco, and terminating at Cottonwood Cotton-wood Wash. The new stretch of highway will replace a stretch of Highway 50-6, which through lack of attention and old-age has become a dangerous route for cross-country travelers. With the exception of a small experimental stretch of Interstate 70 west of Crescent Junction, this will be the first major piece of Interstate building build-ing in our part of the State which will be readily available av-ailable for travel. Several stretches have been built, ac considerable cost, between Green River and Salina Canyon, but those are not open to traffic, even some have been completed for over a year. Bids on the Cisco stretch, along with bids on another an-other stretch of 1-70 west of Green River, will be opened on August 1. Together they will cost some $7 million, according to State Highway department estimates. As always, roads are the key to progress in isolated iso-lated Southeastern Utah. Although considerable money mo-ney has been spent over the years gradually improving improv-ing our road network, local people had begun to wonder won-der when Interstate highway construction emphasis would be moved from the Wasatch Front to other important im-portant areas of the State. It is to be hoped that the 6.5 mile stretch of highway from Cisco won't be left alone after completion, com-pletion, and that subsequent stretches will be immediately imme-diately built to connect the road with the nearly completed com-pleted Interstate 70 in Colorado. |
