Show Colorado Commisi on Protests D&RG Prospector Discoh finuan ce Action A formal protest to discontinuance dis-continuance of the D&RG Railfcoad Company's Prospector Pros-pector train service between Denver and Salt Lake City was . filed Friday by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, with, the Interstate In-terstate Commerce Commission, Com-mission, Washington, D. C. The letter of protest alleged al-leged that ". . the present or future public convenience conven-ience necessary roes not permit such 'a discontinuance, discontinu-ance, nor would the continued con-tinued operation of these trains constitute an unjust and undue burden upon the interstate operations of the Denver and Rio Grand Western Railroad1 or upon interstate commerce." The Colorado PUC requested re-quested an investigation be instituted by the Interstate Commerce Commission, and that hearings on the matter mat-ter be held in Denver, Glenwood Springs, and Grand Junction, Colo. as well as Salt Lake City, Utah, and other appropriate appropri-ate cities and towns in U-tah U-tah in the premises. In addition, the PUC of the state of Colorado requested re-quested that it be made a party fo any investigation instituted by the Interstate Commerce Commission and be permitted as such to receive copies of all pleadings, plead-ings, testimony, exhibits, and be permitted to produce pro-duce witnesses and offer testimony as well as cross examine carrier witnesses, .and other rights of a full. ,party in interest in such a proceeding. Copies of the letter were mailed to the D&RGW offices of-fices in Denver, the Governor Gov-ernor of Colorado, the May or of Denver, and many o-other o-other Mayors and) officials of interested towns and organizations. or-ganizations. A copy of the letter was also mailed to the Moab Chamber of Commerce, which recently filed a protest pro-test against removal of the Prospector with the Colorado Colo-rado PUC. Unless plans are thwart- ed.i the D&RGW plans to. discontinue the Prospector run as of January 29th, 1967. Removal of the Pros-1 Pros-1 pector , would limit the Moab Mo-ab area, and many others along the line, to access of only one (passenger train per day, provided the Zephyr Zeph-yr service is maintained. The .proposed removal of the Prospector comes at 'the beginning of an expected! expect-ed! tourism rush into the area as the newly established estab-lished Canyonlands Nation al Park facilities are completed com-pleted and opened to the public. |
