listed isted on the S governess speaking to the t director who was with more or less success managing to Project the great i tawny beast on to a set which c had been built to represent a part of the jungle As they approached the set however shouts houts of f warning warniS shooed them off n Dont Don't come any nearer an assistant director screamed The noise still more anno annoyed ed the temperamental lion and it roared more ferociously than ever and whisked its mean tail viciously Gosh they shouldn't have visitors on ona ona a day like this But he was a polite man and so he disguised his irritation In a cloak of explanations You see it is rather a delicate proposition The lions lion's trainer doesn't know how to direct the scene and the director doesn't know how to direct the lion It is impossible to get any anyone one who can do both 1 Well he could do a lot more with it If he tried tried gentleness and kindness instead in instead in- in stead of bullying and threatening the little schoolgirl declared and the assistant assistant assistant as as- director replied Perhaps but looked as if he thought all you know about it 1 TEARS VEARS EARS later when Lolas Lola's father lost YEARS his property and and she was faced aced with the alternative of marrying a man she didn't love or earning her living the memory of this scene shunted itself forward forward forward for for- ward from the recesses where it had been pigeon-holed pigeon with many other less pleasant pleasant pleasant pleas pleas- ant experiences For since that free care-free spring morning when she visited the studio war had intervened and there had been belm many dark days in Lolas Lola's life be picture motion-picture Im going to a director of animals she startled her family by declaring one day That is something I know I 1 can do I l love ve animals animals animals ani ani- mals and they love lore me and we can work together in perfect harmony i S And that is how Lola Kreutzberg became became be be- came a a picture motion-picture director of all sorts of animals She told all about it one afternoon recently as she was vas passing through New New NewYork 5 S York en route for the South Sea Islands where s she e has been commissioned to film flint the life and habits of the strange wild creatures which infest that region People seem to be so much more in int interested in- in 5 t rested in large al animals mals she said h s but the small animals and the what- what y you call eh 1 insects are really more in ino in- in o Spiders and little reptiles and d mice and fishes oh fishes oh they are so marvelously marvelously mar- mar clever and domesticated In filming wild animals however there must be some thrilling moments of danger arent aren't there she was asked Oh yes es she conceded of course But one must not think of those moments moments moments mo mo- ments The animals sense instantly when you OU are afraid of them You must impress on them all the time that you are master firmly and the vivid face grew rather enigmatic They must look lookup lookup lookup up to too you as a superior animal as it vere were Yet you must not frighten them If you do you wont won't get them to do anything for you I mean you will no not g get t the sort of films you want What I do Miss bliss Kreutzberg explained explained explained ex ex- ex- ex slowly is to photograph In motion the habits of the animals to mow snow oY just how they live and act natu natu- rally Wild animals are just as much afraid of human beings as human beings are of them really they are more afraid We know what they are but they dont don't know knew what we are Unless it is hungry hungry hungry hun hun- gry gry or is defending itself a wild anial animal animal ani ani- mal al will not attack a human being Of P 1 rl c Not all of L Lola Kreutzberg's pets are as quietly loving as the kid she holds in her arms course she added philosophically if it is hungry and there is nothing to cat but Dut a human being it will eat cat him Most wild animals are night nig-ht prowlers they really only come to life after it is dark So I have to get them accustomed to the lights so that so-that that the glare does does' not disturb them when I take the pictures THE moments when the hungry Y animals animals' animals animals' ani- ani ni- ni mals' mals meal times come around wont won't you tell us how you managed to escape their menus the writer asked simple I always have something something something some some- thing for for- them that they will like to eat better than me she laughed That sounds silly doesn't it But it is the truth The ones which are aie most difficult difficult difficult cult are the animals which only eat live prey That's when you must look out People send me animals from all over the world One man sent me a beautiful ful oh ful-oh oh a very beautiful beautiful python Pythons eat only at long intervals and they wont won't touch anything that is dead My Iy kind unknown friend neglected to send life nie word when his gift had eaten last As I wanted to get the picture as soon as possible I had to stay around the studio I didn't know as I said just when he wanted to eat But I had with me all the time in that studio while he was getting up an appetite a nice fat little pig The python you know is It crushes its prey Well it itlay itlay itlay lay coiled up and very still for days It became quite accustomed seemingly to me and the little pig Only I didn't venture so near as the little pig did The little pig sniffed it and walked around it and lay down beside it and seemed as if it were asking the python to play with it Always e except for a afew afew afew few hours' hours sleep occasionally I kept near my camera and every now and then I turned the crank so that it would be accustomed accustomed accustomed ac ac- ac- ac to the noise and not be startled when the time came to take the picture Then suddenly one morning while the pig was gamboling around the python snap snap whisk just like that the python coiled itself around the little pig and crushed him to death It moved with an incredible swiftness which I cannot cannot cannot can can- not convey to you Its prey was undoubtedly undoubtedly undoubtedly un un- un- un dead b before fore it knew what had happened It did not suffer sutTer so much I can assure you as if it had been killed by a human being IN TN THE swift gesture which Miss 1 Kreutzberg made with her hands the interviewer saw across the palms and at af the base of the fingers deep white scars scars mementoes mementoes of wounds which must have bave penetrated to the bone Seeing they had been observed the animal film producer sought to change the subject to spiders but she was over over- ruled Do tell us of some narrow es escapes escapes escapes es- es capes she was begged You were not always fortunate enough t to Have a scapegoat around were you 1 You refer to those she spread out the strong white capable hands then closed them quickly That was my 1 1 One night when I had been to the opera I returned to my studio to get something I was in evening clothes and I think when the thc light suddenly woke up my friend the bear he hc didn't l' l recognize cognize me So he attacked me mc and fought me all over oyer the thc place lie He was so strong and t the taste of blood bloo d made him wild i Yi jI y f i w Rl 0 little bear did that I He Ite e. e was such a a cunning little baby baW b bear bar r when I I got him first and I taught him to do tricks He lie was clever clever oh oh so so clever and clever and he followed me around like a dog But I knew he had inside an ugly disposition I seldom allow visitors in my studio Human beings for some reason loVe to tease animals and they do not like it But it was necessary for this little bear to become accustomed to people because he was going to to another studio after he was trained He lie had known me so long I think he thought I was his mother because I fed him and brought him up And he was very jealous He didn't like any anyone anyone anyone one to come into the studio and talk to me Then one night when I had beets been to the opera I returned to Jo my studio to get something I was in evening clothes and I think when the light suddenly suddenly suddenly sud sud- denly woke him he didn't recognize me So he attacked me and we fought all over the place He was so strong and the taste of blood made him wild So clever he was He kept all the time between me and the door I could have telephoned for help help of course but if any anyone one had come in he would have probably killed my little bear and I 1 couldn't have that So I 1 did everything I could to distract his attention I call him a little bear be r but he wasn't small you understand I call him little because I liked him Well after a while he became a little bit exhausted and with some empty tin film cases I made a great noise by throwing throwing throwing throw throw- ing them on the floor It startled him him and he moved forward to investigate So o I managed to escape I had to send him away until my hands were completely completely completely com com- he healed led If he had smelled the least bit of blood on them he would have remembered that on one occasion he had been m master ster and would have lost lostaU nil all respect for me I had to send him into exile for months Otherwise he would have become very wild You cannot cannot cannot can can- not bl blame me him it was his nature And I brought up four baby lions to maturity No animals are not treacherous treacherous treacherous erous even tigers will behave beautifully beautifully beautifully fully unless you frighten then them If you them at time use a weapon against any they naturally will wll be on their guard and some day when you are not looking they will spring upon you But I have never used a weapon in m training training- my animals animals ani animals ani- ani mals for pictures I have infinite patience patience patience pa pa- tience I get their confidence and they love me TUT UT little animals are much more nore BUT intelligent than large ones In Insects Insects Insects In- In sects and spiders and fish are wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully wonder wonder- fully interesting studies Before I tell you about them however how how- however however ever I 1 want you to know about some dome some flying dogs which were sent to me by bya a gentleman in Java These flying dogs are just what their name implies They are like dogs with wings They are f a Y r r r o 55 h M 2 T K R 7 x z i i. i S 44 S 5 1 4 AC r I Screen stars frequently appear with wild animals and seem to enjoy it just as much as Estelle Taylor does docs her frolic with witha a lion but the animal trainer does docs not get t the e carefree thrill of the actor Constantly he is thinking Suppose that brute doesn't behave J very wild and fight fiercely I had to keep them under a netted inclosure for months before I began to work with them I kept them in a forest not far from Berlin It was in the summer months and after a while they felt quite at home They swing from the trees by long strong hooks which they have on the tips of their wings These they also use use to tear their prey And they have very sharp teeth While I was waiting for the flying dogs to become tame enough to film I studied the birds in the forests Among the most most interesting are the coo-coo coo birds A newspaperman here told me that you have an expression that a man who is coo-coo coo is crazy Well let me metell metell metell tell you the coo-coo coo is a very wise little bird It is is very pugnacious THE mother coo-coo coo bird always l lays ys her eggs in the nest of some ether species of bird where there are eggs which will hatch about the same time as hers Oh yes they show a great deal of intelligence about them She lays only one egg then flies away Sl She e has no maternal instinct Thus the mother who owns the nest hatches the coo-coo coo baby with her own Then do you know what the little interloper does the minute it is born It shoves out all the other baby birds after killing them You see it is born with that instinct to fight for fora a nest to live in it in-it it seems to fear that it will wall have no place to go and nothing to eat if there are any other baby birds there And the mother of the brood doesn't recognize that the little stranger isn't her own She feeds it and raises it until it is old enough to fly flyaway away I got some wonderfully interesting pictures pictures pic pic- tures of their habits AND A ND there too I got some wonderful studies of spiders They are so human they are funny Lady Spider is such a shrew Lord Spider is such a poor henpecked creature In their little family mother does all the work while father timidly slinks around on the job of making himself as inconspicuous as possible Bright eBright and early Lady Spider is out in the web which is a sort of combination combination combination com com- living room and hunting ground the bedroom is a small closely woven cocoon hidden in the shelter of some some leaf leafor or twig Her first job is to shake off otT all the sparkling dewdrops which have collected during the night And she is in such a rush to do this Down she scuttles and vigorously shakes the web until not a jewel is left For there will willbe willbe willbe be no breakfast until the fly or other in insect insect insect in- in sect arrives and she is too wise to light up her trap with dazzling danger signals Lady Spider finds lots to do to occupy occupy occupy oc oc- oc- oc cupy her time The web is broken when some heartless passerby tears it with a astick astick astick stick or some lumbering animal breaks through it So she has her mending to do This she does by means of a liquid which comes out of holes as the end of her six little legs immediately this liquid touches the air it hardens into the tho thread with which she spins her web Then too she is a very dainty little creature and spends a lot of time making her toilet On her feet are beautiful tin claws These she employs tiny s 's to comb herself when she isn't using them to catch her insect victims When I go to the South Seas I expect to get some fine specimens of the gigantic tarantulas The small spiders are not poisonous to human beings but at the base of their jaws they have a little sa sn which is filled with poison for insects When she seizes her prey the spider buries her tiny fangs in its body and auto auto- this poison enters the wound She is
