Show Jy Py PyOn On the first floor of ot the state capitol the Daughters of the Pioneers Pioneers Pio Plo have ha gathered t together a most wonderful collection of ot articles articles ar ar- tides of ot the long ago And what memories this collection of articles recalls Why was the collection n I made was asked by a visitor on Wednesday The reply was simple enough Just to preserve history I Ancl An it does As I remember the i of ot the Daughters of the Pioneers came in ln April 1901 The purpose as a stated at that time was to preserve preserve preserve pre pre- serve history And the theor theory which was ad advanced then has been carried carried car car- ried ned out The organization does preserve history and there is more history in Utah than in any of ot the theother theother theother other mountain and coast states for tor Utah has always been in the limelight The city of ot Salt Lake has been the mecca for thousands in the past and will be in hi the fu tu- tu ture The history of every year is recorded by the Daughters of ot the Utah Pioneers enriching the archives of ot the state In wonderful wonder wonder- ful tul way RELI RELICS S OF EARLY DAYS This organization holds monthly meetings It is constantly calling on the old settlers of ot the state to send in anything that will vill add to I the historical facts Of af the territory and state The response has been I remarkable for on this floor of ot the Ii capitol building there is housed a 0 most remarkable collection of ot the I articles that were in use in ln the early days The pioneers of ot Utah are those who came caine to the territory prior to the wedding of ot the railroads at Promontory Point on May 10 10 1869 for the advent of ot the transcontinental transcontinental transcontinental railroad brought an end to pioneering Collection of ot articles z used by the pioneers prior to that time make the exhibit so remarkable remarkable remark remark- able The collection is enhanced In value because of ot personal interest attached to each of the articles on exhibition FIRST GIFT IN 1869 The assembling of the exhibits was was begun in 1869 They were first housed in the basement of the old Deseret News building which stood on the site of ot the present Hotel Utah or the old tithing house grounds and office The first gift was from Bishop William WU B B. Preston Preston Pres Pres- ton an old cupboard which had once been used by Brigham Young I The cupboard was soon filled tille with relics Then in 1906 larger quarters quarters were found to store relics and hold meetings in the old Lion house when Zina Young Card was wasI made librarian and custodian of ot the I exhibit Then In 1911 the old Deseret museum was reestablished by the officials of the L L. D D. S S. I church in the Vermont building with Dr J. J E E. Talmage in ln charge The church authorities furnished j housing for the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers collection and added bases teases in which to store the relics Then in 1915 the exhibit wa was moved moved moved ed to the bureau of ot information in inthe inthe inthe the Temple grounds but the space allotted was soon outgrown and in 1919 quarters were granted in the state capitol where the v valuable collection is now stored It Is well weli worth your while to visit it |
