1 I 1 I The Sandman Story FOR TONIGHT Mother Earths Earth's New Gown Old Mother Earth awoke with a start and shivered she was cold and andI almost bare for the Winter had taken talen with him her white gown never caring carIng car car- ing whether she had bad a dress to her back or not when springtime came Oh dear what shall I do shivered shivered shiv shiv- ered Mother Earth as she looked around and saw the bare trees and gardens Here It is spring and not a i I sign of or anything anything- to wear wear In sight 1 i Summer will get here and find me rae j looking so shabby I 1 am ashamed to I think about it Under the rocks and beside the I I stone wall Mother Earth went seeking seek seek- seeking ing something with which to cover li herself but not a blade of grass or a green thing did she find tind and when I I i Night came along he found her I weeping weep- weep Jn ing E. E she was discouraged I C r I r 10 not weep Mother Earth said sam Night I will find gentle Southwind and see if he Ire cannot help you ou Now go to sleep and do not worry Night Night- was always a good friend to old Mother Earth so she went to I sleep dreaming of a beautiful green dress that Night perhaps would find for her I I Soft Southwind came along humming humming hum hum- ming a sweet air of spring and Night told him about Mother Earths Earth's Unhappy Unhappy Un Un- happy plight The poor thing hasn't a dress to her back he said Eaid Well VelI well replied so soft It Southwind Ill see to that right away and off oft he ran to find Springtime that had stopped to rest in the lap bp of old Winter I I Get out your soft green grass at once he told her Mother lother Earth has not a single thing to put on Springtime jumped up and hurried awa away waving a farewell to old Winter Winter Win Win- ter as he disappeared over the hill bill far up north All AU night he lie worked and in the morning old Mother Earth I found on her back a gown of beautiful ful soft green But that was only the beginning Inning S f for the next morning nin when she awoke Mother Earth found her green dress aress trimmed with yellow and violet and I soft pink and other soft sort spring shades and when Summertime I came ho found I Mother rother I Earth dressed in the most i beautiful gown frown he had ever seen Mother i Earth shook out her embroidered em em- embroidered broidered green reen gOwn with sh sho pride as met Summertime on th the crest of a hill hilt but she did not tell him how near she came clune to catching her wIthout with wIth- out a dress to her back And nd as Springtime passed them on her way over the hill hilI old oM Mother dother J I h I Earth whispered to him never ne to tell telI that she found her so shabby I But Springtime had no thought of telling for well he knew he lie had lingered when he should have been at work Summer with wilh his glad smile warmed Mother Earth and decked her with so many lovely gowns that she did not dream When Springtime came along next year car she very cry likely would find Mother J Earth again a to her back S gown J 0 S 0 0 0
