Show Sports Here and There by AI Ablett The Industrial league first half race ended up with American Fork and Helper tied for the top. A date for the play-off hasn't been yet at this writing. Helper beat Brigham City Wednesday , night in a postponed game 9 to 7. This left them with 12 wins and three losses. American Fork has the same. Max Pessetto pitched his fourth straight game in a period of about 8 days. The 1 chunky little Helper right-hand- c er has been a tower of strength 1 to the Carbon boys in their run for the wire. Max has been in 1 trouble in several of these gam- 1 es, but when he had to have it, it was there. A world of stuff plus a heart as big as a tub. In Wednesday's game Don Gust and Orsen Bailey turned in sensational sen-sational plays in the first inning to get Max off on the right foot. Helper got two runs in the top of the 9th to break a 7 to 7 tie. Brigham City's first man up in the 9th got a single but that is as far as he got. I The All-Star game at Helper last Sunday night was won by the South, 9 to 6. But they had to come from behind in the last three innings. A number of the boys picked on the two teams didn't show up, but those that did, put on a good show. The accounts of the game didn't play it up much but the two teams set a record for double plays in Utah baseball. Eleven double plays spiced the affair. Seven by the North and four by the South. The North averaged a double play an inning for the first seven innings. They made their seven and the South three of their four in the first seven frames. If you know of any more in one game, let us know. I am sure of the last 20 years. The teams start the second half tonight. I am writing this Thursday (yesterday). Most of the teams have added strength for the second half, so another great race is in prospect. The locals should get off to a better start in the second half. They won 6 of their last 8 games gam-es in the first half. So with their team set they will be tough. Magna has added a fine looking look-ing youngster in Keef, a junior in high school from San Jose, Calif., 17 years old, 6 ft. and a-bout a-bout 180, left handed all the way around. Great prospect. With Glen Tuckett on second they have strengthened their infield. in-field. Glen handled 15 chances in the All-Star game and had 4 for 5 at the plate. Evans needs pitching. Provo is going with a bunch of youngsters. Lob Collins is looking for a long ball hitter. Plenty of hustle on this nine. Helper I understand is adding a left handed pitcher. The rest of the club is set. John Caputo is the only new addition at A. F. but John has added plenty to them. Brigham City needs pitching, maybe get it from Powers. Bob is rounding into shape. So here's to the second half. See you next week. AL |
