Show AS&R BEGINS ANODEOUTPUT American Smelting and Refining Refin-ing Co.'s anode plant at Garfield has been producing blister copper cop-per shapes from which Kennecott Kenne-cott Copper Corp. will make cathode "starting sheets" for use in that firm's $16,000,000 electrolytic elec-trolytic refinery. AS&R spokesmen said that their new $3,000,000 plant at Garfield was engaged in manufacture manu-facture of "large-sized" anode sheetings. These are being stockpiled stock-piled at present for use by Kennecott Ken-necott in making the smaller starting sheets. The latter are pure copper sheetings which receive deposits of copper during the electrolytic process from the anodes, composed com-posed of "blister" copper containing con-taining impurities. Regular anode sheet production produc-tion will be commenced as soon as the present production is completed. During normal operations, oper-ations, the smelting companys new plant will produce both the primary material for the starter sheets and the regular anodes for the refinery. Kennecott makes the starter sheets, it was reported, through electrolysis similar to the regular regu-lar refinery operations. In this process, the "cathode" to be used in making starter sheets are an yed metalcov-ered metalcov-ered with grease. The starter sheets are eventually peeled oft the alloy cathode as pure copper for use as cathodes themselves in the new refinery. O |
