Show ATTEMPT TO WRECK LONG ISLAND TRAIN NEW YORK, July 4. Bloodhounds are siding; ths detectives who ars searching today for ths highwaymen who made an attempt to wreck a Long Ialand railroad train near Valley Stream, L. I., last night. A fifteen-car fifteen-car passenger train crowded with pleas-sure pleas-sure seekers wss speeding into this eity when Engineer Whit ford saw aa ob-struetioa ob-struetioa oa the track. He threw on bis brakes, reversed his engine and brought the train to a stop within fifteen fif-teen feet of the obstruction. A tie had beea planted ia a hole dug between tbe rails, tha end tilted toward the approaching locomotive. It had been firmly spiked down between the ties snd then securely tied by ropes. |
