When the Deutscblaad II. ended its brief career of six weeks ia a wreck at Duaseldorf, Bheaish Prussia, oa Maf IS, it demonstrated more clearly than had aay of the previous five disasters to Zeppelia dirigibles the uncertain character of that type of airship. Thejflrwt photograph of the accident to reach this country is herewith re produced, showing the complete collapse of the dirigible and making clear how amazing was the fact that aone of the passengers or crew was injured. All had just been made ready on hoard the airship for a passenger trip. There were eight passengers, four men and fonr women. The llcntschland had just cleared the shed when a violent vio-lent gust of wind drove her back sgainst the entrance. At the impact several of the balloonettea burst and the consequent loss of gas destroyed the equilibrium of the airship. Then another gust of wind lifted the airship up bodily and dropped her upon the roof of fhe shed. |
