TAX COM-MISSION REPORTF FEWER AUTO DEALERS THIS YEAF Utah h.is approximately 10 fewer automobile dealers tin-yea-than last, it was reported today by the Utah State Tax Commission. According J" Commission Chairman Patrick Healy. Jr., 1'.'; motor V( hide dealer.; bold lic-enses, yelling cither new or used cars, or both. Kaeh ul these ileal-ers is under a $.1,000 bond, which protects the public against fraud t or fraudulent representation. 7fi2 salesmen al.so have been licensed, who may sell lor lie i ensed dealers only and may not make independent deals. Auto : mobile salesmen are under $1000 bond, which is to protect the public against fraudulent repre ' i.entation by the salesman thus ! both the dealer and his salesmen ' are resoonsible for any state ' incuts made in the sale of a mo-tor vehicle. All bonded dealers must have their licenses prominently dis-- i plaved at their place of business, and they must have a place of business and not be "curb stone" brokers. Field inspectors are used to check licenses and bonds, and to investigate reports of illegal and fraudulent transactions. So far very few of the charges are brought to court, most of them briny adjusted by the inspectors without legal action. "The 'educational' period is now over," Chairman Healy said, "and enforcement is, being tight-ened by the Motor Vehicle Deal-ers Administration Division of . the State Tax Commission, head-ed by Arnold M. Seder." Demand for drivers' licenses has increased 50 in the rural communities in the past few months, since a Salt Lake City judge hits been g out jail sentences to drivers without them, it was reported. The report further stated that approximately 40 of the total population of the state is now operating some type of motor e, but that some 50 of the people are licensed. Mr. Healy said that the 10 of licensed non drivers is probably made up of older people holding "grandad-dy- " licenses, which do not periodical renewal. These estimates were based on the fact that 205,000 drivers' and chauffeurs' licenses are now val-id, and 200,111 motor vehicles are licensed as of April 30 of this year, which includes 37,000 trucks, 900 motorcycles and 383 busses.
