Joshua Wallace Voorhles, a negro, filed a petition, peti-tion, signed by 678 members of his race, with the City Clerk In Kansas City, Kan., asking that his name be placed upon the ballot for Mayor upon the Independent ticket to be voted at the coming municipal munici-pal election. Vorhles was born a slave In Nashville, JBt before the close of the Civil war. He has been a member of the police force and a deputy street commissioner, and now Is in business for himself. "Do you expect to win?" waa asked of him. "Sure I do. Wouldn't have entered the race if I hadn't. No man ever lost yet that I backed for office. I can push myself in the same way." |
