When the trial of Binder Hermann, former Commissioner Com-missioner of (he General Land Office, was resumed, Ms, Meldrum. former Surveyor-General of Oregon, and who now stands convicted of conspiracy - in land frauds In that State, was cross-examined by Attofjiey Worthlngton of the defense. He said that pressure had been brought to bear on him in 1904 in Oregon Ore-gon by Heney and .Burns, government at-tor. at-tor. j. who told Mm that if he did not tell what he knew1 about Hermann he would get a severe Jail sentence. After stating that he had said at that time that he knew nothing that would incriminate incrim-inate Mr. Hermann ha replied to a similar sim-ilar question which followed: , "I think I told them to go to h ." The witness said that Mr. Hermann while commissioner, had told him that It would be a good thing to buy up school lands in a certain section of Oregon, Ore-gon, as the section was to be included in a forest reserve. While Mr. Hermann did not say so, the witness said he understood un-derstood that profit could , be made in this transaction by selling the lands to the government or exchanging them for better lands out there. |
