FLASHES by Jim Abplanalp GEMMELL BDAA SMOKER DRAWS HUGE CROWD The first and finest athletic card held in Bingham for several sev-eral years, drew a huge crowd to the Gemmell arena Wednesday Wednes-day night, as the jam-packed fight fans thrilled to the mixed boxing and wrestling show. A pre-show battle of local youngsters started the evening off with a bang as the kids really livened things up. Five good amaeur bouts comprised com-prised the leather slinging activities activi-ties with all the lads putting on good performances. Henry In, classy West Jordan battler, de-cisioned de-cisioned Montoya, a local lad, in the feature fistic attraction to top off the highly enjoyable fight program. v Billy White of Texas and Bob Cummings of Salt Lake opened the wrestling card, with White taking two straight falls over Bob. In the main event, Ken Mayne of Salt Lake City took two out of three falls from Jack O'Riley, Australian champ. The Gemmell club was jammed jam-med to the rafters and everyone was pleased with the entire card. In the near future, perhaps several sev-eral local fighters can be matched match-ed with outsiders to provide another an-other interesting program. J. BRISK TAKES ROUND ROBIN HONORS Joe Brisk, averaging over 200 from scratch, walked off with the second annual Princess theatre Handicap Bowling trophy the past week as the popular tourney completed its final rounds. Joe compiled series of 808, 884, 900 and 837 to amass 3429 pins in the sixteen games, topping the nearest near-est rival by 45 points. The others in the first five finished fin-ished in order: J. Abplanalp 3384, Joe Harker 3352, Al AbleU 3281, Frank Zaccaria 3235. High game and series was rolled roll-ed by J. Abplanalp the final round, a 261 in a 927 series, as nearly every bowler having good scores and many high series. Paul Slotte shot an 875 series the final night. The BDAA Travellers in the Salt Lake Traveling league, dropped drop-ped a 3 to 1 decision to the leading lead-ing Mullett-Kelly squad at the K-B lanes. Ace Smartt of the clothiers, rolled a 675 series on games of 244,, 204 and 227. Bingham bowlers who copped the Southside classic league crown last week, finished the season with a four game sweeper Tuesday to write finis to their very successful year. Bowling interest of the entire Intermountain region, centers at the Ritz lanes this week end, as top-notchers from near and far gather for the famous Ritz Classic Clas-sic singles tourney. With bowling greats such as Ned Day, Buddy Bomar, and last year's winner, Bill Flesch of California showing their wares, competition for the $500 first prize is sure to be keen. This tourney, starting tomorrow (Saturday) (Sat-urday) and ending Sunday about midnight, will draw nearly 300 entries and several local keglers will be in there trying again. Another tournament is being arranged for the near future on the Gemmell club alleys as the boys find the sport extra popular after the long lay-off of league competition. |
