Show FUNDS SOUGHT FOR CANCER AID Utahns have been asked to contribute $20,000 In communities communi-ties outside of Salt Lake county, with another $30,000 from Salt Lake county as their part in the national campaign for cancer control, through the American Cancer Society. The campaign will be conducted throughout April, designated by an Act of Congress and a proclamation of the president of the United States as Cancer Control month. The campaign in Utah is under the chairmanship of Ferrell H. Adams, state auditor; and in Salt Lake county under D. J. Murphy. It is estimated that 1 in 8 will die of cancer unless the deadly disease is brought under control. Until a cure can be found by medical me-dical research control is effected by its early detection. It is estimated esti-mated that from 50 to 90 percent of infections, depending upon the location, can be cured if discovered discov-ered early. Utah receives far more than it ever gives in cancer research work. In 1947, the U of U received receiv-ed $25,805 from the American Cancer Society and already this year more than $400,000 from the government for cancer research re-search work. To aid cancer victims, with the funds received from its drive, the Utah division provides monthly detection examinations free at Holy Cross and St. Mark's hospitals hos-pitals in Salt Lake City; at St. Benedict's alternate months in Ogden, and periodically at Brig-ham Brig-ham City, Provo, Price, Cedar City, Fillmore and St. George. |
