Long before s o'clock, the hour fixed for the assembly, the plasxa of St. Peter's Pe-ter's was crowded by citisens of Rome and visitors gathered to witness the brilliant procession of the princes of the church to the throne room of the Vatican. SLOW AND eTATELY. Blow and stately progress was made by the prelates and their attendants to the court of Domaso. In a few minutes min-utes the doors swung open and the pope appeared. He led the cardinals Into the throne room, end there all but members of the sacred college withdrew with-drew to allow the cardinals to carry out the historic procedure of naming the men who would receive the red hat, eymbollo of the wearer's elevation to the supremegovernlng jodyofths church. Formal presentation of the Insignia of office to the new cardinals will take place Thursday, In the hsll of beatification of the Vatican. That ceremony cere-mony will be much more elaborate than that which occurred today. PRINCIPAL FIGURE. Chief interest In today's ceremony centered In Archbishop Dougherty, who, after thirty-one years ss priest, bishop snd archbishop, attained a place In the sacred college at aa age much below be-low the average for members of that august assembly. Hardly secondary In Interest waa the appearance of the two German archbishops, Schulte and Von Faulhaber. Because of the concordat concor-dat with Spain, the newly created Spanish cardinals will receive the red hat from the hands of King Alfonso. |
