Show I ' Sheepmen Not Quitter j REGARDLESS of the fact that no class of business men in the country suffered to a . greater extent than the sheepmen through the process of readjustment, these men, many of whom are among the leading citizens of Utah, are taking their losses with more or less resignation resigna-tion and are demonstrating that they intend to stick to their business, in confident expectation that the worst is past and that they will participate in the era of prosperity which now seems close at hand. According Jo repprt3 JjornJiyestock-markct centers, fat lambs and sheep, for the first time In more than a score of years, are selling at less than they cost when taken out to feed lots as thin feeding animals. - Not only are the sheepmen losing what it cost them to fatten the animals, but in addition they, are losing as much as tS a head for sheep and approximately 3 for lambs, -while it Is stated that thousands of head are costing as much as $8 each to their, feeders. It is stated that Iamb and sheep prices are now the lowest since 1914. One of the reasons is the slump in the demand, especially in Indus- trial centers, where industrial activity has been at a minimum, while another salient cause has been ' the dumping of large quantities of New Zealand mutton on the American market .. Some people might wonder at the action of the sheepmen in sending .their producllo -ihe market under present conditions, but jt must be remembered that they must obtain loans, which later must be repaid. Last year they made their customary loans, but these were based on a much higher Value of their property, and now the must not only repay these loans without realizing a profit in other words, not only turning over every cent of their proceeds, but raising other money besides. ' With the increasing activity In business generally gen-erally aji& the increasing demand of the general public for wearing apparel, it Is considered a certainty cer-tainty that the long lane 'of depression through which the sheepmen have been traveling soon, will show a decided turn to the right. |
