Show V Army of Stockholders in United States Is Growing Gain During 1920 in Number iof Certificate Own--. ers Double That of Preceding Year T7HAT the United States is rapidly becoming a nation of stock-'1 stock-'1 holders might well be argued in looking over the ever lengthening lists of holders of securities. The increase in these "partners" of big business has been a noticeable accompaniment of American Industrial expansion, but never so marked as In th past two or three years, says th Bolton News Bureau. Bu-reau. stocks ar more popular with the rank and file, sot alone because there are the greater possibilities of profit, but because of the element of chanc Inherent In most Junior securities. "Safety First" docs very well aa a slogan, slo-gan, but ffi fsea Is not permanently ' Imbedded la American character. The Interest and excitement attendant upon speculative chance more than compensates compen-sates for the smaller degree of safety. Hence th flood ot stocks that the public has absorbed In the past flv yars, the spurious as well as the good. Good atocks, meaning such aa repre-, repre-, sent real equity with real prospects of Immediate or ultimate returns, are becoming be-coming more widely distributed every year, regardless of "bull" or "bear1 markets. The theory that th number num-ber of corporate stockholders expands In a bear market and contracts when prices are experiencing an upward swing may have some bssls In the history-of Individual stocks, but does s7 not seem to hold for the greet average f of corporation securities. The tide of stockholders hss been rising for years. 'due not only to new Issues, but to ' older securities going Into th hands of the small Investor. In 1919. the aggregate number of stockholders of fifty prominent Indus-triat Indus-triat companies shown on the books on January 1 or nearest available date was (43. i.
