Mabey and Mrs. ' Mabey were the honor guests at a dinner din-ner given by the Weber, clhb In Ogden last night at which 1160 waa raised for the Near East relief. The governor was the principal speaker and In his address expressed his pleasure at being be-ing able to be present at such a splendid splen-did meeting held .for charity's sake. He referred to the strange ways of fate, particularly In the late war. and how Armenia, although she was one of the victors, was really worse off than all as a result of the ravages and massacre mas-sacre of Armenians by the Turks. In which more than- 760.000 of the people were killed. "Armenia put more Into the war than the United States," the governor continued. con-tinued. "We suffer little and they have suffered much. The dear ones that were loat to Armenia in the fighting fight-ing do not compare with the losses laced through starvation. It is common com-mon for us to applaud those who succeed. suc-ceed. Armenia succeeded, but how sad is her victory." IOovernor Mabey reviewed the war as It was fought by the half-clad and half- atarved Armenians In throwmg off the 'yoke of oppreeslon and tyranny of the murderous Turks. He also referred to the fact that there was no one present who could tell of the feelings of the I Armenians In receiving the gifts from the generous people of America. It means that those people would thank God for succor from us. he added. Other speakers were John D. Spencer of Salt Lake and A. A. Hey wood. W. H. ! Mattis and the Rev. John E. Carver. Judge Dan K. Sullivan gave a reading. ;C. Angus Wright presided at the banquet. ban-quet. The music was furnished gratuitously gratui-tously by the Variety orchestra and the Axel Nylander trio, and Miss Grace Matthews rendered two solos. Invocation Invo-cation waa offered by Monsignor P. M. Cushnahan. The benediction was pronounced by the Rev. John W. Hys-top. Hys-top. Ladles of Miriam chapter of the Eastern Star served the banquet. |
