High ptlces paid by the army for Its coal during the shortage scare last summer were inquired in-quired Into today by senate commit-te commit-te on reconstruction. Lieutenant Colonel James B. Barney, in charge of coal purchases for the army, testified testi-fied only three bids, for a total of 7500 tons, were received when the depart-i depart-i ment advertised for a million tons for jthe Eastern departments last July 1. j The price ranged from $4.50 to $.50 !a ton and since bidder had offered to .'supply coal in the West and on the Pacific coast for as little as $2.70 a ton, the ICastern bids were rejected. ! |
