Smith, superintendent superinten-dent of the Granite school district, I and a group of Magna women filed f the legally required petitiona with ' county commissioners. ' Provided the petitiona carry, as It was contended by proponents of the library plan, more than the re-quired re-quired number of 10 per cent of laiinayars' signatures it become mandatory upon the county commission com-mission to appoint a library board, which in turn will take steps to establish libraries and levy taxes to support the institutions. Commissioners referred the voluminous volu-minous bundle of petitions to County Coun-ty Clerk W. J. Korth for check- ing and tabulation of signers to de- l, termine whether each is a payer I ef property taxes. MM Kirn Pli-as Dr. Smith was accompanied b Mrs. W. B. Boucher. Mrs. Wal-f Wal-f lace Williams and Mrs. R. C. Parks representing the Magna Women's club, which has for the last 20 i years supported by voluntary con- tributlon a small library in their L own community. Claim that the petitions carry 1 the legally required 10 per cent of ' taxpayers' signatures applied strict- ly to the Granite school district, It was explained. There it was estimated that 14.528 taxpayers reside. The petitions were signed by 1855 ' persons, counting husband and wife, who both sigr-.d in many L Instances, as one signer, Dr. Smith I explained. Center Sought J The proposal is to establish li-il li-il braries in about 20 centers throughly through-ly out Granite, Jordan and Murray j school districts. ' Cost of the project would be ' about S20.000 for the first year and that amount could be raised by one-third mill levy on the present ' assessed valuations of the districts, It was reported by Dr. Smith. The revenue produced by the levy would be divided a nearly as possible pos-sible in equal sums among the 20 centers where branch libraries are established, it was explained. At the county clerk's office it was estimated that a minimum of probably prob-ably two weeks would be required f to check the petitions and determine deter-mine validity of the signatures according ac-cording to tax rolls. |
