Show FOLSOM RIOTERS FACE GAS DOOM SACRAMENTO, Nov. 27 (UP) Five Folsom prison convicts today faced death in California's new lethal gas chamber. The five Edward Davis. S5; Robert Rob-ert Lee Cannon, 23: Albert Kessell. 28: Fred Barnes, 39, and Wesley Eudy, 33 were found guilty last night of the first degree murder of Warden Clarence A. Larkin, one of four persons who died in the "bloody Sunday" September It rioting riot-ing at the prison. A superior court jury of six men and six women took five and one-half one-half hours of deliberation to reach a verdict without recommendation for leniency. New Pleaa Walt For Cannon, the lone hope of escaping execution lay in reversal of the verdict by a higher court, or executive clemency. He spurned the additional plea of not guilty by reason of Insanity, to which the other defendants resorted. AH, with the exception of Cannon, commencing Monday will be tried by the same jury on the insanity plea. The quintet will be sentenced to death on Tuesday, unless motions mo-tions for new trials are granted, The death penalty la mandatory under a verdict of first degree murder. The state charged the five were responsible for the slaying of Larkin, Lar-kin, who died of stab wounds five days after the melee, in which he heroically fought to check the prison break attempt. Other Victims Other victims of the break were Guard Harry H. Martin and two convicts. Clyde Stevens, Saa Francisco Fran-cisco bank robber, and Benny Ku-charskl. Ku-charskl. Wounded during the rioting riot-ing were Guard Captain W. J. Ryan and Davis. Cannon and Barnes. Convicts Barnes, Eudy and Cannon Can-non received the verdict unemotionally, unemo-tionally, Davis showed signs of nervousness ner-vousness and Kessell was deeply affected. |
