Show Burke Chops Up Soldier For Decisive Arena Win By TOM. M IE PORTER A pair of near double-knockouts and a clean-cut victory by Jackie Burke of Ogden over the game but outclassed Kid Cannon of Fort Douglas marked the return of boxing to Salt Lake City Monday evening at the arena. Burke,, aeasoned by encounters with numerous outstanding ring stars. Including Barney Ross, literally lit-erally cut Cannon to pieces before winning by a technics knockout in the fourth round of their scheduled eight-rounder. The Ogdenite was never in trouble, and was unmarked. Cannon, who recently won a championship in ths Third division tournsment of the army as a representative rep-resentative of the Thirty-eighth Infantry, In-fantry, was game, but lacked the seasoning and polish displaysd by ths Ogden battler. The aoldier waded wad-ed In wld open in a futile attempt to land a telling blow, and had hn eyebrows and lips slashed badly by Burke's hard jabs In ths first two rounds. Jackie hit the soldier with "everything "every-thing except the bell" In the second round to send him to the canvas for a nine count, the round ending at that point. Cannon continued to wade in during dur-ing the third and fourth, although bleeding profusely from a cut over his right eye, and it began to appear ap-pear that he could not be put down to atay, Jackie having hit him with everything he had. The end came suddenly. Downed for a nine count by smashing Jabs to the face. Cannon arose to meet a sltzling right cross and hit the canvas again. His seconds promptly prompt-ly threw In the towel, and both fighters were given a rousing ova- i tlon aa they left the ring. Lightweights Al Cohsn of Chicago and Bob Hsndricks of Long Beach, Cel.. almost "stole the show" with i a fin presentation of how to hit ' both opponent and canvas in a fast i preliminary bout.
