IHitumsriDtS substances-with which workers regularly a erne into contact may produce mors or less serious reactions la the skin. These reactions are of various types. Some of thsm are simply a chemical burning of the akin or Irritation. The others are Infections Infec-tions of the skin by ths firms which are always present and ready to attack when tha akin la broken. Still others are chronko irritation! which resemble ecsema and sometimes the irritations are so persistent that they develop the nature of cancer. Any one of these Irritations or Inflammations of ths skin may be associated with a secondary Infection Infec-tion by some other organism. Sometimes just the use of soap and water, as In the ease of washer women, will cause sesame, of the skin. From time to time various Irritants Irri-tants have been listed by specialists special-ists in diseases of ths skin. In one of the most recent lists there are hundreds of different drugs and combinations of drugs, and associated with this a list of occupations occu-pations in which Irritant substances sub-stances regularly used msy bring about disturbances of the skin. Ths re is hardly an occupation known to mankind In which this possibility does not exist One of ths most common forms of irritation of the akin in an occupation la that resulting from a contact with oil. This is usually called oil folliculitis. A reaction on the skin occurs from a mixture of oil end dirt which blocks the follicles of the hair. Then tha glandular secretion secre-tion Is blocked and inflammation develops. With this Inflammation there will be a secondary infection by pus-forming germs. Usually the condition occurs first on tha banda but it may also be seen in other parte of the b o d y. Sometimes these minor Infections extend so that they become boils. Workers in grinding industries sometimes have the skin broken by metallic dust or fins stsel chips which mingle with the oil and which may then be rubbed Into the akin.
