Show Widow of Pioneer Editor Dies at 106 SAN LUIS OBISPO, Cel.. Feb. I fUP Mrs. John Wheeler, widow of John Wheeler, publisher of the First southern California newspaper, died at the home of a granddaughter here yesterday at the age ot 108. - A native of Norwich, Conn., Mrs. Wheeler came to California In ISM. Two years later her husband established estab-lished the Californian at Los Angeles, which was the first newspaper published pub-lished In southern California. Wheeler drew cartoons of local celebrities and news events. Among contributors to the paper were Bret Harta, Joaquin Miller and Ina Coolbrith. Wheeler died 30 years ago. |
