Show TEAR DOWN OLD JAIL Prisoners to Be Removed to Make Way for the Contractors. The old city Jail is being depopulated as rapidly as possible in order that the contractors who will erect the new Jail 1 may not be delayed when they arrive to begin their work dismantling the old building. Sixteen petty offenders have been pardoned by Mayor Thompson, and the others will probably be removed to the county Jail tonight or tomorrow. The present Jail was built In 1867 and for a number of years was large enough to house the offenders who were sentenced sen-tenced by the Police court. Of late years, however, the old building has slowly disintegrated until it is so Insecure Inse-cure that many. Jail breaks have been effected. , The new Jail will be modern in every particular. iThere will be dumbhouses for both men and women; bathrooms, dining-room, a hospital, two exercise corridors and sixty-five separate cells. It will be connected with the Police courtroom by a closed passageway. There have been half a dozen offers from contractors, to tear down the old Jail without recompense from the city, provided they will be allowed to claim all the plunder they may find concealed In the walls. It Is believed by many that there are many valuables cached away In the walls, where they have been secreted by the prisoners who have hidden-the goods there to keep lrom being caught with stolen goods in their possession. |
