Show GENEROUS HELEN GOULD. Helen Gould is one of nature's noblewomen and it is a pleasure to the average newspaper man to bear , witness to her worth and sterling character. There, is every reason why Miss Gould should be narrow-minded, purse-proud and icy-pulsed. Born the daughter of one of the most unscrupulous and cold-hearted of Gotham millionaires, a man who prided himself on his trickery, she has overcome nature and blossomed into what the real American woman should be. With money to spare Miss Gould has not become exclusive nor has she suffered with that malady peculiar to the rich swell head. Iler home is open to the rich and poor alike. Her purse string is always' hanging where the poverty-stricken may grasp and pull it. Misfortune never draws a draft that her kindness does not' honor. .More than half her life is devoted to an effort to aid the under thousands and thereby uplift mankind. The blood she inherited from her father is nowhere seen in her life. She is not a chip of the old block. The daughter is of a type far removed from the father. Miss Gould sees a great deal of good in men, American Amer-ican men. In an address delivered recently she said the privileges, opportunity and protection accorded to women in the Unfted "States, such as were accorded ac-corded nowhere else in the world, came through the chivalry and self-eacrificing labor of the men. of the United States andthat it was appropriate thatvthe women should show their appreciation by devoting some time and thought to movements that benefit men. Miss Gould argued that clubhouses for young men, those who labor, are needed in every large city in the Union, where men may desert the home life fora few hours or three times a week and enjoy the society of men.v She offered to build and provide an income for the support of such a clubhouse in Xew York. With this work of philanthropy in operation the total amount of money Miss Gould has given to charitable and 'philanthropic movements reaches theimmense sum of $5,000,000, and Miss Gould's generosity is practical, for every dollar she has distributed dis-tributed .has been placed where.it counts. She has done more for humanity than Carnegie or Rockefeller, Rocke-feller, for she is in close touch jvith humanity and is herself intensely human- |
