' It-13 hi'h tine that these manufacturers who'e'end their impure goods', into Utahf .were' calfed to time.. It is within the power of the Legislature to make it impossible for them to continue to steal with impunity, not only the health but the money of the people of Utah. Commissioner Com-missioner Heiner's bill in many ways is a good one. It strikes at the root of the evil. MR. HEINER'S ANNUAL REPORT PROVES BEYOND A DOUBT THAT PURE FOOD ACTION BY THE LEGISLATURE IS IMPERATIVE. The commissioner commis-sioner is a faithful, intelligent public official. His tireless investigation and his able presentation of the results of his probing demonstrate this fact. And his effort to protect the public health by compelling Eastern manufacturers to- send only pure food into this State ought to be indorsed by the Legislature and made operative by the passage of Mr. Heiner's bill. THE SALE OF ADULTERATED ARTICLES HAS BECOME SO EXTENSIVE THAT RADICAL RADI-CAL MEASURES ARE NECESSARY TO ERADICATE ERADI-CATE THE EVIL. The United States Government itself, in the most casual matter of fact way, issues with other statistics bulletins showing the scientific schemes for swindlirig the public. Take the single item of spices. The United States Government catalogues cat-alogues solemnly various swindling substitutes. We quote: Allspices-Spent cloves, cracker dust, ground shells, charcoal, yellow corn. Cayenne Rice flour, yellow corn, turmeric, mineral red. Ginger Cereals, mustard hulls, peas. Pepper Refuse of all sorts, cocoajiut shells, bran, pepper dust, ground crackers. And so the Government report goes on throughout the entire list of spices, and throughout an innumerable innumer-able list of necessary products of other kinds. Adulterations Adul-terations of all kinds are advertised, sold and the public stomach suffers but nobody is called to ac-' count; Recently it has been discovered that ecet-anilide, ecet-anilide, a dangerous drug, has been substituted widely for phenacetine, a drug much less harmful in its effects. The substitution occurs because an amount of phenacetine which would cost a dollar can be replaced with the same amount of acetani-lide acetani-lide costing two or three cents. BUT THE MOST DANGEROUS AND MURDEROUS ADULTERATION ADULTERA-TION IS THAT OF FOOD PRODUCTS. Statistics show that adulterated milk, flour, sugar and other necessaries of life destroy hundreds of lives every year, especially among children. IT IS SAID THAT THERE IS ENOUGH ARSENIC SOLD IN BEER IN NW YORK AND CHICAGO IN ONE DAY TO KILL ONE HUNDRED MEN. And' still nobody no-body is punished. But why are these articles adulterated? adul-terated? In the answer to this question is found the motive of these thievish manufacturers in palming palm-ing off impure food products upon the innocent wholesaler and retailer. By adulteration the cost of the 'production of articles of food is cheapened j and the profits of the manufacturer are increased at the expense of the consumer's health. But w hat cares the manufacturer of adulterated goods for the consumer or the gradual poisoning of his system? IT IS THE UTAH LEGISLATURE'S DUTY TO FURNISH PROTECTION FOR THE PURCHASERS PURCHAS-ERS OF FOOD PRODUCTS .They are necessaries of life, the people must buy them and it is in the power of the Legislature to rdake it impossible for impure articles of food to be placed on sale here. We spend thousands to protect us from petty thieves. Why not enact legislation to drive out another class of offenders who prey upon the public pub-lic the manufacturer who sells us necessaries of life under false pretenses? GIVE US PURE FOOD PRODUCTS.
