His face was pallid, his eyes were bloodshot, his hands trembled . and he, looked as though he were on the verge of colV lapse. He. pleaded not guilty, and then asked for an opportunity, making a statement to the court. Judge Dlehl said that aa the city was not ready to try the case ,at that time, it would be continued until Monday. "If your Honor please," he said, "I am all unstrung. I have been drunk for a long time,, and I feelthat If I were sent to Jail until Monday, I would surely die." "If you are sick, all you will have to do is to tell the Jailer about It, and he will send -tor the City Physician, who Is paid a salary for attending to men in your condition." ' That waa all the consolation that the prisoner got from the Judge. "If you please," the trembling pris-oner pris-oner continued, "when I came here, a few weeks age I had several hundred dollars. I have blown In , every cent that I had save a few dollars. Then Mellonthy shook aa though he were on the brink of the delirium. "Will you let me get out of town-If I plead guilty?" he asked. "If you are not too sick to get away, yes." said Judge Dlehl. "I'll get away somehow," said Mellonthy, Mel-lonthy, and as he reached the door, ho turned and addressing; the Judge, said: "Salt Lake whisky is a terror, sure enough." Then he vanished.
