Show GET BIG GAS WELL . HEAR GREAT FALLS GREAT FALLS, Mont. Sept .-The first natural gas weU In the history of Montana has been struck thirty-two miles from this city and is now flowing a large and steady volume ef gas. The discovery has occasioned considerable excitement and a rush te the ner hUds is predicted as soon as the exact whereabouts of the well can be ascertained. The find was made by P. B. Gallagher and Dwight Chafee, who brought the new of th discovery dis-covery to Great Fall early this morning. They will return to the well with a party of friends at one to file upon the surrounding sur-rounding country, which is of the public domain. At a depth of eighty feet the drill entered en-tered aa oil ehale and ha continued In that formation for about 270 feet At a depth of about 300 feet the flow of gas wss encountered. The next day Gallagher and Chafee cooked their supper by gas, placing plac-ing two iron bare across a four-Inch piece ef casing, en which a kettle was placed. The heat emitted by the burning gas was Intense and a "prairie mulligan" was quickly prepared. The two men state that after they bai left camp the light of the flaming gas was visible for a distance ef from four to five miles. The pressure of the gas has been trebled In the fifty feet drilled since the gas was struck, and while the hole is but four Inches In diameter for the entire depth, the- pressure Is such that the gas may be Ignited at a height of four feet above the mouth of the welL The pressure is steadily stead-ily Increasing and apparently very great pressure will be attained with greater depth. |
