Made desperate by the severe conditions, financial and otherwise, imposed by the trust magnates who control the theatrical situation in America, the playwrights -of this country are talking of seeking redress re-dress through the operation of the union "Pau'f M. Potter, who dramatized "Trll- I by" and brought "The Conquerors" over from the French, declares that his colleagues col-leagues In the United States may take a leaf out of the book of the French dramatists drama-tists and meet the managerial trust with a playwrights' trust or union, as he prefers pre-fers to put It. In some such measure, he says, is the only relief from a situation rapidly approaching the intolerable. Mr. Potter had Just returned from Paris. In an Interview he spoke warmly In favor of the methods by which the French writers for the stage have held greedy managers In leash, and he asserted that tbe theatrical world was on the eve of a revolution as a result of the French precedents which might be put in operation opera-tion in this country. It Is believed that Mr. Potter is seal-ously seal-ously exploiting the purposes and achievements of the Dramatic Authors' society of France In -order that he may draw out his American brethren and inspire in-spire them to launch a similar organisation organisa-tion for their own profit and protection. |
