Show -. riy LL -o u: .Ilcc-ey Enthusiasts to .Organize: a League That Will Play at the Different Rinks. The last two nights have put a coat-ir.g coat-ir.g cf ice on some of the smaller ponds around the city ar.d the small boys lm-rr.ediately lm-rr.ediately commenced to get out their ekates. The ice was not In condition' to - tempt many of the grown ups but the owners of the various rinks are all alive to the fact that the skating season-Is here and all have a force of men working work-ing to put the rinks in order. It Is expected by the weather-wise prophets that the coming winter will be cold enourh to furnish the finest kind of skating and anyone who has seen the crowds which flock to the rinks when the Ice is good knows that the sport has a strong hold on the affections of the Salt Lake -people. Salt Lake has some of the cleverest figure skaters in the West, and although the open competition for the championship champion-ship title of the State has not been attended at-tended by great success In the past, it Is hoped that the coming winter will see a well regulated and well handled competition. The weather Interfered materially last year but this can be avoided this year If proper precautions are used. . Several years ago there were several hockey teams In the city that played interesting in-teresting of somewhat ragged games at the different rinks. Last year the disputes dis-putes between owners of the different rinks kept the game from taking the front place In winter sporta However, It Is the greatest winter game known, and so far as excitement to the spectators specta-tors goes Is superior to football. There Is every element In the game which would tend to make it popular. There Is the chance and need for clever team play and the game is open enough to give opportunities for brilliant Individual Individ-ual work and fast passing. It Is hoped among the hockey enthusiasts enthu-siasts that a league can be organised In the city and a regular schedule' of games played. |
