Show CONVlCrED OF FRAUDS Jury Out Only Thirty-Five Thirty-Five Minutes In Land Conspiracy Trial. PORTLAND, Or., Dec. 7. After deliberating delib-erating for thirky-flve minutes (fhe Jury in the United States District court yesterday yester-day returned a verdict convicUng S. A. D. Puter, Horace G. McKinley, Emma L Watson and D. W. Tsrpley, guilty of ccnsplring to defraud the United States Government out of the title of a portion of its public lands. Mr. Hall asked that the defendants be placed under additional bonds In this case, but the court decided that a bond of HOOO in the present case would be ample, and therefore ordered that such security be given. This will place the defendants each under 14000 bonds for each of the three cases, with the exception of Tarpley and Wolgamot, who do not figure in the succeeding suc-ceeding cases. The case has been a long and stubbornly stubborn-ly contested one. No pains or time or expense ex-pense has been spared by the Government to accomplish Its purpose. The remarkable efforts of Col. A. R Greene, special Inspector of the Interior uepartment, In accumulating evidence, had woven around the defendants a net so closely compact and unbreakable that there was no escape. With this well-laid foundation Special Assistant Attorney-General Heney, ably assisted by United States District Attorney Attor-ney Hall, hurled the mass of evidence at the defense until it was bereft of every hops other than that of objection and appeal ap-peal to a higher court. There is no doubt that an appeal wiH be taken. The attorneys for the defense are now preparing their motion and will. In all probability, present it at the opening open-ing of the next case, on December 13. |
