Show PLATT WOULD SOLVE SOUTHERN QUESTION WASHINGTON. Dec. 7. Senator Piatt of New York will tomorrow introduce a bill providing for a reduction of representation represen-tation of certain States in Congress, principally prin-cipally in the South. Many bills of this character have been ofTered from time to time In one or the other branch of Congress, Con-gress, but no persistent effort has been exerted to pass any of them. The measure meas-ure to be presented by Senator Piatt Is said to have originated In the Republican club of New Tork City. 8enator Piatt, when he presents the bill, will call attention to the fact that It will affect Northern States, especially Massachusetts, Massa-chusetts, as well as States In the South. Its backers will declare that the meas- ure Is non-partisan. The bill proposes that the representation of a State shall be based pn the male voting population, according to the last Kicial census. The reduction in the uthern and solidly Democratic delegations, delega-tions, should the bill become a law, Is estimated at sixteen members. |
