The plan of . keeping the Salt Lake public schools open for five weeks, to the. end of the' regular term, on a tul-tion tul-tion basis, has fallen to the ground, and the! schools will accordingly ' cloze on -May 4th for the summer. The returns from the schools, which were submitted to the Board of Education Educa-tion Committee on Teachers and School Work at the meeting last night, shows that of the $25,500 needed to run the schools to the end of the term, only 17349.60 was subscribed, leaving a deficit .Xf $18,150.60. ' The chances of keeping open now are decidedly remote. The eighth grade and - the seniors at the. high school will continue con-tinue to the end . of the regular trm. the committee having decided to utilize principals and supervisors for eighth- grade and high school instructors. A recommendation to, this effect will be presented to the Board of Education at an early date. As the principals, su- terviBors and Janitors are paid on annual an-nual contract out of the maintenance " fund, ' their salaries would not be Effected Ef-fected by the closing of the schools.
