Show Forgetting tha Msina. The report comes from Washington that a. private pri-vate concern is to raise the wreck of the battleship Maine from the harbor of Havana, having bought !the title to it from the Cuban Government, The titory is that the ship when floated will be taken to ew York for show purposes. x . The Cubans cannot be criticised for wanting to get rid of the wreck. It impairs the harbor of Havana Ha-vana and is no doubt a menace to navigation. It 'should be raised. It -should have been raised long ago, and by this Government. - . . "REMEMBER THE MAINE" WAS A SLOGAN TO AROUSE THE NATION FIVE YEARS AGO, CUT NOW WHO THINKS OF THE SHATTERED HULK LYING IN ALIEN WATERS, BTILL THE TOMB OF BRAVE SAILORS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES WHEN THE GOOD SHIP WENT DOWN? It has been said that republics are ungrateful, and ; the case of the Maine would seem to bear out the as- j sertion. " . c i When a nation's expense account exceeds a billion bil-lion dollars a little more or less does not make much difference. The cost of raising the Maine would not have entailed hardship upon any one. THE APPROPRIATION AP-PROPRIATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AND THE WORK DONE LONG AGO. We do not know who is at fault Perhaps no one is, for what Is everybody's business in nobody's business, but it seems strange that of all the patriots who shouted for war in the halls of Congress after the Maine went down not one had enthusiasm enough to impel him to introduce a bill providing for the raising of the Maine. IF SHE IS RAISED AND EXHIBITED FOR GAIN BY MONEY-GRUBBERS IT WILL BE A DISGRACE TO THE NATION. HAVE WE FORGOTTEN FOR-GOTTEN THE MAINE? |
