Show VAST SUMS REQUIRED FOR THE COAST DEFENSE i Chief of .Engineers Reports; Many Improvements Arc v Recommended for Western Ports. WASHINGTON, Nov. 12. Gen. A. Mackenzie, chief of engineers of the United States army, in his annual report re-port to the Secretary of War, presents an exhaustive review of the work accomplished ac-complished by his corpiurIng the fiscal fis-cal year ended June 30 last and submits estimates of appropriations required for the fiscal year beginning July 1 next. , The report says that the sea coast defenses of the United States are now somewhat more than SO per cent completed. com-pleted. The new works constructed In connection con-nection with the scheme of sea coast defenses to the present time represent an expenditure of $28,000,000 for engineer engi-neer work alone. The estimates of appropriations required re-quired for fortifications work . are as follows: Gun and mortar batteries, $4,000,000; modernizing old emplacements, $942,500; installation of range finders, $500,000; sites for fortifications, $650,0!0; searchlights search-lights for harbor defense, $500,000; preservation pre-servation and repair of fortifications, $300,000; seawalls and embankments, $300,000; casements, etc., for submarine mines, $600,000; construction of sea coast batteries In Insular possessions, $2,000,000; sites for defenses on Hawaiian Ha-waiian islands, $326,100. The expenditures for river and harbor work during the past fiscal year aggregated aggre-gated $23,025,094. Gen. Mackenzie states that the following fol-lowing amounts can be profitably expended ex-pended in the next fiscal year In the districts named: ' Deep water harbor at San Pedro bay. California, $40,000; Wilmington harbor, California. $100,000; San Luis Obispo harbor, California, $65,000; San Pablo bay, California, $8r,000; Coquille river, Oregon, $55,000; canal at Cascade Columbia Co-lumbia river, Oregon, $100,000: Willamette Willa-mette river above Portland, Or., and Yamhill and Long Tom rivers, Oregon, $60,000; Columbia and Lower Willa-metet Willa-metet rivers, below Portland, Or.. $450,-000; $450,-000; mouth of Columbia river, $776,000; Improvement of Yellowstone National park. $168,000; road in Mount Ranier, national park, $100,000. |
