Show WOMAN TAKES POISON AND DIES AFTER GETTING LETTER FROM HUSBAND Mrs. E. Ij. Cooper, 21 years old, commit- , ted suicide at the fit Onaer rooming-house, rooming-house, 217 South Second West street, at 1 o'clock Friday morning", by taking a large dose of a poison believed to have been strychnine. v ' ' ' Mrs. Cooper had lived at the rooming bouse since November 1, and was a quiet tenant, who kept her own counsel concerning con-cerning her domestic affairs. But little Is known of her by her fellow lodgers. Peter Chrtstensen, proprietor of the house, was awakened at I o'clock by a person occupying the room adjoining that of Mrs. Cooper, who said that Mrs. Cooper Coop-er was groaning and screaming in her room. Chrtstensen and his wife went to the room, and found . the unfortunste young woman lying; in th doorway. Bhe was In ony. . Dr. C. F. Gibson, who lives near by, was summoned. - Ten minutes before the arrival of the physician the woman died. - On the dresser at the side of th. wo-nian's wo-nian's bed In her room was found a part ly emptied vial of a crystallised powder, closely resembling; strychnines and a glass in which a few grains of the drug; were left, after she had taken the poison. There was also i found the following; 1 note, addressed to the landlord ot the house: . "Please, If anything happens to me, or , I get worse, notify my husband. H. 8. Cooper, Farmlngton, New . Mexico, by telegraph. I am short of money, and please tell him that I wish, he would telegraph tele-graph me 5. Evans' undertaking; establishment. es-tablishment. - - At the rooming-house It was learned that Mrs. Cooper was about 21 years old. and that she had been married when she was IS years old. It Is thought that her husband's name Is Harley Cooper, and he Is thought to be in the sheep business In New Mexico. Mrs. Cooper received letters frequently from ber husband, and he frequently sent her remittances of 2i Her room rent was due Thursday, and she went to the proprietor of the rooming-house and asked him to let ber keep the room . a few days longer, as she was out of money, but expected a remittance some time during dur-ing the week. i Mrs. Cooper received a letter from her husband Thursday afternoon and went at once to her room, where she remained for more than two hours. When she returned to the room ot an old woman in the house, with whom she spent the greater part of her time, she looked as though she had been weeping. Mrs. Cooper laughed and denied that she had been crying. The young woman complained of illness Wednesday, but seemed to be In her usual health Thursday, and was In good spirits until she received the letter from her bus-band. bus-band. Bo far as any one knows. Mrs. Cooper and "her husband had notseparated, and she expected to go to him In New Mex- ico In a few days. It Is understood that she has one son In Colorado, living with his grandparents. Her husband had never been here, according to atatemnts alleged to have been made by Mrs. Cooper a few days ago. Coroner. Smith has notified the husband by wire, but has received no Instructions as to what disposition will be made of the body. It is not known if an Inquest will be held. |
