Smith tent his resignation resig-nation on Friday last to take effect today. to-day. This morning he left the Health offlce and took a similar position with the .State Board of Health, which left no one In charge of the city office. The question of a new clerk ha been agitated ever since Friday. C. W. Dansle, who has been with the State Board of Health for two years, was a likely candidate, but his appointment was said to hinge upon the appointment of a new Health Commissioner. Dr. Stewart sent a communication to Mayor Morris recommending that M. E. Smith, a brother of Dana T. Smith, assistant as-sistant county attorney be appointed as clerk. Mayor Morris, in answer, sent a letter stating that If Dr. Stewart would appoint Charles M. Jackson he would confirm the appointment. It Is likely that Dr. Stewart will refuse to appoint his choice. ' There probably will be np clerk of the board until the Mayor and Councilman can come to an understanding relative to the appointive offices. |
