Show TO LICENSE GAMBLING Councilman Hobday Has Prepared an Ordinance Regulating Making of Wagers. An ordinance . "regulating turf exchanges, ex-changes, bucket-shops, poolrooms', bookmakers book-makers and similar establishments," has been prepared by Councilman Thomas Hobday. Among other things, the proposed law provides that bucket-shops bucket-shops and turf exchange shall pay a license li-cense of 110 .per day or $300 per quarter and "any business pertaining, to margins mar-gins of stocks, securities or commodities. upon the result of any race, contest or event, shall be declared a separate business busi-ness and each shall require a separate license." A portion of the ordinance reads as follows: , "It shall be" unlawful for any person, firm or corporation, without obtaining a license for such purpose, to engage in the business of conducting- a bucket-shop, bucket-shop, turf exchange, pool selling establishment, estab-lishment, bookmaklng establishment, or any other business or establishment in which business or in which establishment establish-ment margins or stocks, securities or commodities are bought, sold or dealt In in any manner whatsoever, or in which business or establishment bets or wagers wa-gers are taken, given, dealt in or registered regis-tered upon the rise or fall of any stock, security or commodity, or upon the result re-sult of any horaa race, contest, or event whatsoever." Any infraction of the proposed ordinance ordi-nance is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not more than $100 or 300 days in the c ity jail, or both. Councilman A. J. Davis objected to the ordinance at a special session of the license committee yesterday afternoon, saying that its passage would legalize gambling. The ordinance was taken under advisement. |
