Show - Old Expressions. "In reading an old history, written over a century ago, lately, I noticed frequent use of the words 'strenuous and strenuously, stren-uously, " said Prof. T. E. Dalby of New Orleans!. "One of our recent Presidents, who was noted for his facility In employing employ-ing phrases, declared that a publle office was a public trust' It had a familiar ring to some, and a gentleman who had the patience to hunt it up found that Jefferson Jef-ferson Davis had used it in one of his messages to tho Confederate Congress. Still further research brought out the fact that Mr. Davis was not the originator origina-tor of the expression, but that it was coined long ago by a celebrated English chancellor. Washington Post. |
