Show CGDEN POLIGEfriAN MADE DIG BLUNDER IN ARREST Prominent Han and Woman of Salt Lake Are Taken From Train; Profuse Apolqics Follow - Wanted, for larceny; by the Salt Lake Police department one woman, very tall, stout, light complexion, blue eyes, gray suit, black hat. One man, medium height, slender, light complexion. Arrested by the Ogden Police department de-partment on above description H. O. Martin, six feet tall, heavy build, dark complexion. Also Mrs. H. O. Martin, medium height, slender, brunette, dark brown eyes, plain suit, black hat trimmed with green. The Ogden Police department is not to be congratulated for a piece1 of detective de-tective work, which resulted yesterday in the arrest of Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Martin of Salt Lake, on suspicion that they were wanted here for larceny. Mr. Martin and his wife went to Og-den Og-den yesterday morning. Mrs. Martin was on her way to visit friends in the East, and was accompanied to Ogden by her husband. ' ' As they alighted from the train, a bur(y policeman of the Ogden force notified noti-fied them that they were under arrest. They were not told what heinous crime they had committed, and were ordered to go with him to the, station. Mr. Martin produced a stack of letters, let-ters, showing that he Is manager of the East Side Carriage and Transfer company com-pany of Salt Lake. He showed an lden-tlcatlon lden-tlcatlon card from his Insurance company, com-pany, and exhibited his wife's ticket to Omaha, but the wily sleuth would not thus be despoiled of his catch. Mr. and Mrs. Martin went to the police po-lice station In a hack, with the policeman. police-man. There Mr. Martin demanded an explanation, or he said there would be damages to pay. In a trice a dozen of his influential Ogden friends had been summoned to the police station to properly prop-erly Identify the suspects-Mr. suspects-Mr. Martin then learned why he was arrested and the Salt Lake police were notified. Then there were explanations, and the Ogden police realized that a grave ' error had been committed, and that a policeman had blundered. Apologies were hastily made, and an attempt was made to mollify Mr. Martin. Mar-tin. The police were able to "square themselves in a measure, and Mr. and Mrs. Martin were driven back to the union depot where Mrs. Martin boarded her belated train. Mr. Martin returned to Salt Lake, and now threatens to "get even" with the Ogden police force. |
