I am told by good Mor-mons Mor-mons that he has a remarkable mem- ory for names and faces and Is even Erigham Young's superior In that respect. re-spect. The man who promulgated the polygamy polyg-amy revelation could not enumerate the names of aU his children, but President Smith is said to be able to c&U each of his children by name, and more than that his relations with the entire forty-three are as Intimate as are those of the father who has only four or Ave youngsters. A good Mormon Is my authority au-thority for these statements. And by the way a story told on Brig-ham Brig-ham Young Is being charged up to President Smith. This little tale Is so good that It Is worth repeating. It seems that one day Bzihgam was walking walk-ing down Main street when he saw three small boys smoking cigarettes on a street corner. The president stopped short. Singling out the cigarette smoker he said: "Little boy, don't you know that it la wicked to smoke those nasty cigarettes? cigar-ettes? What would your mother and father say If they were to see you now?" The boy looked up In the speaker's face in astonishment, "Don't you know me, pa?" he shouted, as his eyes flashed fire. Brlgham cut his sermon short and passed on. WHERE BLUE BLOOD AND RED BLOOD FAILED TO BLEITD. A rather tart story is going the rounds concerning the Assembly ball which was given In this city several weeks ago. It was the plan to make this ball the most exclusive event of the kind In the annals of local society life. Well, according to one of the ladies who was invited to take part In arranging ar-ranging the preliminaries, tbe ' first meeting of the managers of the ball developed de-veloped a discussion which eliminated the? exclusive feature which was to make the baU a blue-blooded affair and resulted in letting the bars down so that persons who possess ordinary red blood as well as a dash of the blue fluid, broke Into the sacred circles ot the exclusive ex-clusive set which was to run the ball. When the conference referred to opened, one of the leaders stated that the greatest care must be exercised in selecting the persons who were to be Invited to the balL Another lady remarked re-marked that she had several friends whom she would like to invite. "Now be very careful who you pro. pose Mrs. X.," Interrupted the lady who was managing affairs. Mrs. X. flushed a deep red and sat down. Hardly had she taken her seat before a society woman whose name Is known in every home In Salt Lake, arose and said she desired to make a few remarks. "I have listened to the discussion as to the sort of people who are to be Invited In-vited to this ball," she said, "and I am afraid that my friends are not good enough for this function. I know many refined, true gentle women who are not on the list you have prepared and 1 shall therefore withdraw from the meet! nr." This came In the nature of a bombshell bomb-shell and consternation reigned supreme. su-preme. Nine out of ten of the women present secretly applauded the woman who had spoken out In meeting. She was known as a woman who always stood by her friends and her action In the conference only added to her host of admirers. As might have been expected, the conference was speedily declared ' off and the ball when it was held was not the "exclusive" affair it was originally planned it should be. It was a success because persons with, red blood as well as blue blood were present. My authority for this little story, which has a moral, is one of the women who attended the "all blue blood" conference. PRESIDENT SMITH'S WIFE A WOMAN OF TACT AND GENEROSITY. Gossip to the contrary, I am Informed on the best of authority that the five wives of President Smith live together In peace and harmony. My adviser even goes so far as to say that these plural better-halves love and admire each other and sincerely at that. The generous and sympathetic nature of the first wife Is said to be responsible responsi-ble to a great degree for the good will which the five Mrs. Smiths entertain for each other. It was pointed out to me that wife No. 1 is ever ready to waive her right to precedence and give way to the other wives. For Instance, when President Smith went to the dedicatory ceremonies cere-monies of the St. Louis fair he was accompanied ac-companied by his second wife. This was by request of the official wife, I am told. During this trip the church head had the honor of Introducing wife No 2 to President Roosevelt. And then when President Roosevelt was entertained in this city the official wife once more denied herself the pleasure pleas-ure of meeting the Chief Executive of the United States and this time the third wife was the one whom President Presi-dent Smith presented to Mr. Roosevelt Roose-velt Now If the honorable "Teddy" remembers re-members faces he must have done some tall thinking, but "Teddy" Is a wise man, one who does not see too much, and an embarrassing situation was avoided. But this official wife Is a sensible, clever woman, I am told, and one who makes her fine tact count. THE GOSSIPER. |
