Feb. 23 Beautiful sprlny-llke wether prevailed here yesterday, and all the homes of Americans were bedecked with the stars and stripes. Because of Washington's birthday falling on Sunday Sun-day . some objections were made to holding receptions on that day. The objections, ob-jections, however, were smoothed away by making the reception at the United States embassy -a purely informal affair, at which tea was served. It was a most enjoyable affair, and the 600 present Included In-cluded Dr. Nevin, rector of the Episcopal Episco-pal church: Dr. William Burt, head of the American Methodist mission in Europe: Bishop Burke of St. Joseph, Mo:; Monsignore Farrell of the American Ameri-can college. Col. Tillman of West Point, Mr. and Miss Cheat e, Mr. and Mrs. Prescott Lawrence of New York. Mrs. Frank Morris Avery of New York,, Mr. .' and Mrs. Dudley Hickman of Boston, Allison Armour of New York and Sir and Lady Blane, the latter formerly Mrs. Henry BlfCce of Boston. The Chinese Minister, with the staff of the legation, also attended as. a com-pllment com-pllment to the United States. - |
