In the midst of a pyrotechnic display like a searchlight search-light Rone mad. those abroad In New York last night struggled over icy pavements pave-ments or slipped In a slushy aubstance which gave way at the slightest touch of a shoe. It was a ?ay of contrasts in the weather under foot. Ice and water I made It a miserable one for those who walked and for horses that drew vehicles over the slippery asphalt. For those who sought elevated trains It meant a slow ride over a structure which was continually Illuminated with erratic flashes of a light almost like a arrhlight, which was sent in every possible direction. More trouble was epparent on the elevated railroad than anywhere else. For a time trains on all of the lines were stalled. As rapidly as possible, however, motor cars equipped with scrtpers ahead of the brushes on the third ralLwere sent out, and lata at night these were able to proceed at a fairly good pace. Early in the evening trains were almost at a standstill. |
