Show MAIL-CARRIER SAVED FROM WHAT SEEMED CERTAIN DEATH BY TROLLEY FENDER; CROWDS WITNESS SCENE . . . - The efficiency of the fenders with which the street-cars have recently been fitted was fully demonstrated In tk practical manner-this morning when -Mail-, Carrier Orson L. A. Houghton, 7 "Washington avenue, was saved from what seemed death under the wheels of a Warm Springs car. ' Houghton had started out on his morning' delivery route and had a heavy load of mall in the pouch he carried. He endeavored to pass over the track at Second South and Main streets at 9 o'clock, and 'dodging a northbound car, failed to see a southbound car which had Just rounded the corner. He stepped directly In front of it, and was struck by the cushion fender. - The Impact release d the automatic fender, which instanly dropped and prevented pre-vented the unlucky mail man from going- urtder the wheels. ., , The bystanders and others who witnessed the accident groaned and turned their faces, fully expecting that Houghton would be crushed and torn' under the heavy trucks of the car. The motorman, an extra man, with great presence of mind, reversed his car, applied the r.Ir and the sand, and brought the ponderous ponder-ous machine to a stop hi an incredibly short space. Hundreds of persons rushed to the car to lift it from the supposed mangled man-gled corpse of the unfoitunate Houghton. "When they reached the car Hough-, ton was found to b?un:njured. rave fcr a number of bad' contusions and bruises all over his body. The fender had done its works effectively, and to that Houghton owes his life. As soon as he had been extricated from his plight Houghton picked up his mall which had been rtrewn in all directions in the street and proceeded on his route. The motorman was so unnerved that he was compelled to turn his car over to another man, to complete hl3 run.. ...... swore out a complaint charging this defendant de-fendant with adultery, procured the services of a Sheriff by the name of Naylor and armed herself with two wretches whom she called detectives, and that the four came to the room of the defendant who was ordered to open his door by the Sheriff, and when the defendant opened the door "the plaintiff plain-tiff rushed in with her detectives and caused this defendant to be KNOCKED DOWN BY ONE OF THE CREATURES CREA-TURES that were in her employ. Inflicting In-flicting upon this defendant personal injury and insult and WREAKED HER VENOM AND HER VILENESS upon this defendant." He says this charge under which the Sheriff forced his entrance was entirely false and has since been dismissed, and was illegal and false Imprisonment; but that he was dragged before a Magistrate and required to give bonds. Paraded in Press. "That she has paraded this charge in the public press' is the last allegation, and "hired the public press to give it prominence for the purpose of ruining the defendant, and . preventing him practicing his profession at law. That she has announced that she will ruin him and SEND HIM TO PROVO, that is the insane asylum, and persistently is attempting with the aid of her confederates, con-federates, to. .ruin this defendant - "Wherefore defendant prays that a decree may .be entered granting a divorce di-vorce from the bonds of matrimony -upon such terms as may be Just." The order to show cause why he should not pay the $150 temporary alimony ali-mony which was due on January 26th. and which has been filed by Isabel Cameron Brown In the District court, also asks why he should not be compelled com-pelled to give security upon sufficient of his property for the payment of said sum and the further sums of money the court has directed him to pay in the future. fu-ture.
